It’s human nature to feel a little apprehensive any time we start something new, but when it comes to training at the Ralph Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Mission Viejo there is no need for any butterflies. Friendly, highly skilled instructors will expertly guide you through welcoming class structure to ensure that your experience is a rewarding one.
To make your initial journey into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu even easier, here are some tips and information that beginners may find helpful:
What to Wear to Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Session
Don’t worry about suiting up in a GI at first, but it IS a good idea to wear appropriate clothing that promotes comfort, safety and performance. An athletic shirt or any shirt that is form-fitting enough that it won’t ride up during training is a very good start. A sports bra underneath will also serve female practitioners well. Shorts without pockets, buttons and zippers are also recommended. Athletic or board shorts are good choices. Don’t wear jewelry, watches or any other accessories.
Additional Items That May Make Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Sessions More Comfortable
- A bottle of water for hydration
(It is essential to hydrate. However, only drink small amounts at a time before and during class and don’t forget to replace fluids after training as well.)
- A hair tie to pull back long hair and
- A small towel for sweat
Speaking of sweat, it most likely goes without saying, but let’s also address personal hygiene etiquette to keep everyone comfortable. First things first. It may seem counter-productive prior to a workout, but Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close contact sport. So shower (and brush your teeth) before class. Make sure the clothes you wear have been washed. Keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed so that you don’t scratch anyone. Cover any cuts or sores. Don’t wear any perfume or cologne. Also, don’t attend a class if you are sick.
To Ease Unrushed and Comfortably Into Your First Class…
Show up with a little time to spare so that you can get acclimated to your new environment, complete any paperwork if necessary and change if needed. A few extra minutes before class will also allow you to observe and become relaxed and grounded before class.
The Mission Viejo Ralph Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy offers a free training class to make things even easier…giving you a chance to get your bearings without any commitment pressure.
What to Expect in Your First Class
Typically, a class may begin with an introduction and some guidance from your instructor. Then, there will be a warm-up period which will probably include stretching, some light exercises and/or jogging.
Initial training will most likely start with a qualified instructor explaining and demonstrating fundamentals, such as basic positioning, holds and escapes. You may also have drills to practice certain techniques, during which your instructor may help you implement proper form and execution (the good kind!).
At the end of each Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, there will be a cool-down including stretches and possibly a review of what was covered in class. It is also healthy to take deep breaths to return your heartrate to normal while you relax and reflect on what you learned. Class is often concluded with a customary, traditional bow.
As Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes progress, you will begin to spar and roll. Beginners are usually paired with more experienced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to promote optimal learning and for safety.
A Few Brazilian Training Tips for Beginners
- Never ignore a tap and quickly release as soon as a tap is initiated.
- To avoid injury, don’t grab individual fingers or toes and do not execute neck cranks or apply maximum exertion with every move.
- Remember that training is for learning and does not always include winning.
- Try to improve upon yourself as opposed to comparing yourself to others.
- Always employ patience, as mastering techniques can take time and frustration will only hinder progress.
How Should You Expect Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Make You Feel
- At first, you may notice that your grip (which will strengthen over time) weakens more quickly than you might expect.
- You will also probably need more breaks at first, as your instructor will be well aware.
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is an excellent workout, so it may leave you feeling physically expended.
- After class, you may also experience muscle soreness which may include your forearms and grips, core, neck, lower back and hip flexors and lessen as your training progresses.
- Most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students say that it leaves them feeling satisfied and gratified; instills confidence, respect and reverence; and provides them with a heightened sense of accomplishment and enlightenment.
Things You Can Do to Ensure Optimal Recovery Between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes
- A shower after class will loosen your muscles and revive you.
- Eat healthy.
- Get decent sleep.
- Also space out your classes enough (One to two days should suffice.) to allow for ample recovery time.
